What do I need to go to Finland for three months, paper-wise

What do I need to go to Finland for three months, paper-wise?
I plan to temporarily live in Finland with a friend, in about 9 months from now, for about three or four months. We aren't sure if we plan on working or not. What kind of documents do we need to do this, and what would the process be? And incase you know... Which would be more economically feasible, staying in a hostel, or renting an apartment? And the Scandinavian countries tend to be quite expensive, right? So what is cost of food like? Thanks in advance! I'm Canadian. And let's assume we will be there for more than 90 days.

You left out the most important piece of information...your nationality. If you are American, see site below and read section under "Entry Requirements." You may visit finland for up to 90 days without a visa, but may not work. If you wish to stay longer, you will need to use the oink there to contact the embassy about a visa. I don't believe you will be able to work as that requires a work visa, which requires finding an employer to sponsor the visa first. These visas usually require you to be a highly skied, in-demand worker. finland has no shortage of highly skilled people. Hope you hear from some people with personal experience.

Your question is rather untrustworthy. You state that you want to go to Finland for three months (paper wise) and continue about four months in your further question. Additionally you state "working or not". To tell you the truth I doubt that you would ever succeed in getting a visa if your citizenship would require this under those circumstances. Traveling on a visa-waiver is limited to 90 days and does not authorize working, this may be possible on a holiday working visa, but that must be applied before the travel. Finland is a member of the Schengen agreement for travel. To enter a Schengen country you must show he general requirements which I will tell you whenever you tell your nationality or citizenship.:
