I can not recall just which countries it is but there are several that have a law that requires all males from the age of 18 to around 25 to serve their country. They are to do this of their own free will by the time they reach that age, I have heard if they don't then they come looking for them. I don't think they go to that length but if they were to get stop for something then the name would pop up and school is out then. My understanding of it was they had to do at least two years.

6-8 months sounds about right. We have general conscription for males in Finland, so you have to choose between the army (6-8 months) or between so called "civil service" (13 months), if you do not want to go to the army for ethical or religious reasons. Women can also take up military service voluntarily. In either case, your friend should expect extreme boredom for several months to come. Also no need whatsoever to use your brains for actual thinking during that time :-)

Finland has universal male conscription which means every able bodied man must do 6, 9 or 12 months of military service or 12 months of civil service. Refusing both gives a prison sentence. The duration of the military service depends on what you choose or are chosen for. Civil service basically means you work for 12 months. Anyway military service isn't something like you're sent to fight a war or anything. There's light arms and battle training near the barracks, lectures, some exercise and few weeks of camp. Or you can go for the full year and take in some intensive training. I'm not sure what the figures are but majority of men take the military service.
