It depends on your carrier. I have Sprint and all international texting (outgoing and receiving) is 20 cents each. You can plug his/her phone number (make sure you have the country code in there with a plus sign "+ country code phone number") in AIM (or probably a lot of other instant messengers) and it will be free for you. Easy if you have AIM on your phone!
