Finland is warm in the summer, around the same temp as much of Europe and in the winter was -35C when i was there. So, yeah you will need warm boots for the winter and normal shoes and clothing for the sumer. For the winter you need thermal underwear, quilted clothes. Best to dress in layers. Decent gloves and a hat are a must and a scarf cause when that wind blows the wind chill makes it feel much colder and can freeze your eyelashes. I lived there for 6 years so let me know what other info you need.

If you are not arriving in their Winter I would suggest buying once you get over there. The Summer weather will only need very light clothing and perhaps a light jacket. The best shoes are different depending on who you ask! Some people say light hiking boots, some say you should get gortex-lined boots that are halfway up the calf. Either way you need some good light wool socks. They really are the warmest. But again you can get them once already there.

Greetings from Finland! Here are a couple of general websites about my home country, they tell you much more than what I can tell you here: http://www.finnguide.fi http://finland.fi/Public/default.aspx Weather-wise, we do have all four seasons here, so it's not cold all the time. The need of a down jacket depends on where you will be staying though, generally I don't need it if there is milder than -25C though, therefore I recommend you to buy yourself some lighter clothing as well. It's not fun to sweat too much anyway you know!! Anyway, happy stay in my home country Finland!

If your intention is to do some hiking and other activities in the nature then you need some snow boots or hiking boots. It just depends. If you live in Helsinki area (or any bigger town) for that year you most likely don't need all that stuff. Winter in the southern Finland can be slushy and rainy. Due to climate change we've not had extremely cold winters for a long time. Summers are quite warm from 15-25 degrees C. Winters around 0 to -15 degrees C, and rarely less than -20. You don't need to bring all that with you because you can buy just about everything from here. Check the weather conditions and forecasts for your arrival week and adapt to it. It's just subjective thing, if you're used to hot weather you may find the summer too cold etc. The climate is quite similar to some regions in Canada.
