Flower Pattern Seen in Finland

Flower Pattern Seen in Finland!?
I am currently living in Finland. Since arriving I have noticed a flower pattern which appears everywhere here. I have seen it on sheets, curtains, towels, napkins... everywhere! I'm just curious as to what the significance of the flower in the pattern is?

The Unikko pattern is Marimekko’s (Finnish designer) most iconic design. The splashy print came about after Armi Ratia announced that Marimekko did not manufacture floral prints. Maija Isola, always the trailblazer and rabble-rouser, designed Unikko as a protest against Ratia’s statement. The result was the bold, powerful and unapologetic flowers of Unikko. The print came out in 1964, disproving Ratia’s statement and ushering in a new era for Marimekko. Unikko is easily the most recognizable symbol of Marimekko and its popularity has not dwindled over the years. New color waves are created every year, continuing the legacy of Isola’s brilliant design. Her daughter, Kristina Isola, has even created a miniature version of the design. This has been also imitated by IKEA. One reason this is popular is that it is a truly Finnish design. Note that the use of flowers is enjoyed throughout Scandinavia an Norther Europe. This may be due to the long winters, the pattern reminds them of the beautiful flowers that Northern Europe has durring the Summertime.
