You do realise that December is Winter and Helsinki has an average high of -1C or 30F during December? Boats/Ferries run routes that people would purchase tickets on. Nobody who is not completely out of their mind would get a boat from Helsinki to the UK in Winter with six hours of daylight and all of one hour of sunshine on good days. If you have got large amounts of excess baggage some companies specialise in posting excess baggage.

Endure an epic Eurolines journey - http://www.eurolines.com.maggie.priorweb.be/ Or the still cheaper option of flying RyanAir from Tampere to London - 23rd Dec 19.99EUR + tax + baggage fee. Coach from London to Newcastle - http://www.nationalexpress.com/home.aspx

I live in Helsinki and I go to various places (including UK) often. Book a plane flight early to get a good rate , shuffle around your departure times to get an even cheaper fare. (midweek is often cheaper , as is earlybird flights). Once you have your ticket , arrange to send your extra bags, boxes and things as unaccompanied luggage through FinAir cargo. You can save a lot of money doing these things. Forget the boat idea.! gW:-)
